Can I use both a lithium and a lead-acid battery in a dual battery setup for my car?

lithium-alkaline battery

Yes, you can use a lithium battery (usually LiFePO₄) and a lead-acid battery together in a car or truck’s dual battery setup if you use the proper equipment like Lithium dual battery isolator or dual battery management setup.

What You Need to Make It Work

Component Purpose
DC-DC charger (e.g. Victron, Redarc, Renogy) Safely charges the lithium battery from the alternator (which is tuned for lead-acid)
Manual Battery Management System (BMS) Monitors and protects the lithium battery from over/under voltage, temperature, etc.
Smart Lithium Battery isolator  Keeps the starter and auxiliary systems separated when the engine is off

Here’s why mixing them is tricky:

Charging Profiles: The voltages and charging patterns needed by lithium and lead-acid batteries differ. One may be overcharged and the other undercharged if the same charger is used.

Voltage Behavior: Lead-acid batteries gradually lose voltage, whereas lithium batteries keep a constant voltage until almost empty. Premature wear and uneven power flow may result from this mismatch.

Depth of Discharge (DoD): Lead-acid batteries should maintain a discharge of about 50% to extend their lifespan, while lithium batteries can safely discharge up to 80–90%.

Lead-acid batteries lack built-in battery management systems (BMS), whereas lithium batteries do. This may cause monitoring systems to become confused and produce readings that are not accurate.

What You Should NOT Do:

  • Do not connect a lithium and a lead-acid battery directly in parallel without a charger or isolator. Their charging/discharging behaviors are very different and can damage one or both batteries.

How to Safely Use Lithium and Lead-Acid Batteries Together

Typical Use Case:

  • Lead-acid battery: Used as the starter battery (for engine cranking).

  • Lithium battery (usually LiFePO₄): Used as the auxiliary/deep cycle battery (for powering accessories, fridge, lights, etc.).
